Odessa, TX – For the first time the West Texas Food Bank will not be handing out turkeys for Thanksgiving this year, instead they are handing out paper vouchers for clients to purchase a turkey for free from area grocery stores.

West Texas Food Bank Executive Director Augie Fernandes said it is much more cost effective for their organization to buy turkeys at retailer prices rather than wholesale, because retailers like HEB and Albertson’s discount their turkeys so much they end up being cheaper than a wholesale turkey.

The food bank gave out a total of 6,500 vouchers. Each voucher is worth $10. Agencies and pantries that wanted vouchers paid $5 for each voucher, and the food bank picked up the other half of the cost.

The vouchers are good for a turkey, chicken, ham or other related food items for Thanksgiving.
